I started college at Thomas University at age 17. Yeah, I know, sounds young, I was just really smart...okay maybe not, but I was a homeschooler and well that's what us homeschoolers do! I didn't really want to go to college. My sister went to college at T.U. So, of course I would go there too! I had no idea what I wanted to be or do in school, so I just started taking my core. Of course being uneducated by the ropes of college I probably took more classes than I was supposed to. When Josh and I got married we decided to move to Valdosta. You can’t transfer from another college to VSU until you have over 30 credit hours (I know strange), so I enrolled in South GA College, which was a entry type program to get into VSU. We also, had planned on transferring to the University of Georgia, but God had other plans. Finally, I got into VSU, after a long journey. Not really sure how I stayed in school, since I transferred three different times. Most people would have given up by then, but thanks to my family I stuck with it. My last semester at T.U. I had finally decided into getting my degree in Social Work. I've always been intrigued when it comes to family needs, children, and helping them. T.U. had really opened my eyes to the need, but also the MANY job possibilities I could get. So, that was my plan when transferring to Valdosta. I quickly found out that VSU didn't have a Social Work degree..I had to get a degree in Sociology or something and then get my masters in Social Work (ha! Yeah right). At this point I was clueless, but I didn't know that VSU had some sort of dance program, but I wasn't sure what it was. I decided to look into it and it just so happened my first semester there was when they offered for the first time a BFA in dance. It was a BFA In Theatre and emphasis in dance. I decided to put my nerves aside and audition for the program. I had never auditioned for anything in my life, I was extremely nervous, but if all else failed there were only 100 other degrees I could get. Well, low and behold, I was accepted into the program!
I feel like I have been in school for a long time (well, I guess 5 years is a long time, but it doesn't help I changed my major), but then again it feels like it just flew by.
Yesterday I graduated and received my BFA in dance! It hasn't really hit me, and probably won't until the fall. It was a bitter sweet moment. I really loved the program I was in, the people and teachers. Yeah, the school work got old, but overall I had a great experience. I can't say I'm not proud of myself. It was a lot of work being at school all day and being married (which most of my colleagues weren't married and there responsibility's weren’t like mine at all).
I know you probably are wondering. So, what is next? I’m not really sure. I have been praying about it for a while. Most of the dance teacher positions won’t start up again until the fall. So, I will probably look for a little job during the summer. I just can’t stay home all summer and do nothing. It’s kind of pointless and we could use the extra income. I’m praying that God will bring the job he wants me to have.
Here’s some pictures of the event!
